Review
The big screen adaptation of Twilight, Stephenie Meyer's bestselling vampire romance, goes directly to its key demographic: girls whose idea of Prince Charming is a brooding, pale, non-child that can kill instantly at any time. That prince is more exciting to scare the new girl Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) who moves to the city of gray rainy Forks, Washington to live with her father (Billy Burke), the local sheriff who is puzzled by a series of attacks by animals. " On his first day at school, Bella seems to (visible) nauseate his lab partner, Edward (Robert Pattinson). It is the smell of the blood of the vampire's "brand of heroin", and his struggle to not kill her cause an irresistible attraction to her. If he is attracted to the normal or because the smells especially sweet for him in the book is vague and much less clear on the screen, but Bella falls hopelessly in love with Edward, she establishes a dangerous path when nomad vampires in the city presents a special interest in tracking humans. Directed by Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen), Twilight is full of funny moments - not all of which are intentional - and melting, self-absorbed Stewart to Bella's friend Jessica (Anna Kendrick) is Spot-On. The weakest link, unfortunately it is Pattinson. While certainly looks the part, Edward could have used his one additional injection of testosterone (Pattinson, who is British, James Dean used as a model for his American accent). In the scenes where he growls about the temptation to kill those who harm Bella, or flitting around a forest of its warning of how dangerous it is, it is more like a whimpering puppy that elegant monster. The good news is, his chemistry with Stewart (particularly in his great kissing scene) is palpable, which, let's face it, is really what matters to most fans of Twilight.
